PC Engines Alix als WLAN Access Point

I use PC Engines Alix boards as VPN Appliances intended to connect some branch offices. They are rock solid, work for years without any problem and bring the flexibility one needs to implement all the nice stuff. 3x Lan Interface, 2x USB, passive cooling. Quite nice. Complete sets are available on Amazon or at some distributors listed at the PC Engines Website.

I’m actually running one of these Appliances with OpenVPN, Squid for local filtered internet access and a WLAN extension module. Here you can find a nice article about how to do it: http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,6300. A short abstract of this follows below.

Configure the interface in /etc/network/interfaces.d/wlan0.conf:

auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet static
        address 10.41.1.1
        netmask 255.255.255.0
        broadcast 10.41.1.255
        hostapd /etc/hostapd/hostapd.wlan0.conf
        up nat.sh wlan0 eth0 "10.41.1.0/24"

Configure hostapd in /etc/hostapd/hostapd.wlan0.conf

interface=wlan0
driver=nl80211
logger_syslog=-1
logger_syslog_level=2
logger_stdout=-1
logger_stdout_level=2
#dump_file=/tmp/hostapd.dump
ctrl_interface=/var/run/hostapd.wlan0
ctrl_interface_group=0
channel=6
hw_mode=g
macaddr_acl=0
auth_algs=3
eapol_key_index_workaround=0
eap_server=0
wpa=3
ssid=mywlan
wpa_passphrase=********** # must be at least 8 chars long
wpa_key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
wpa_pairwise=TKIP
rsn_pairwise=CCMP
#eapol_version=1
#wme_enabled=1
country_code=DE
ieee80211d=1
ieee80211n=1
ignore_broadcast_ssid=0
eap_reauth_period=360000000
#ht_capab=[HT40-][HT40+][SHORT-GI-40][TX-STBC][RX-STBC1][DSSS_CCK-40]

Test hostapd configuration with real-time output:

hostapd -d /etc/hostapd/hostapd.wlan0.conf

Bring it all up with:

ifdown wlan0 && ifup wlan0

Test if hostapd is running:

[email protected]:~# ps aux | grep hostapd
root      4646  0.7  0.2   6152   724 ?        Ss   22:31   0:00 /usr/sbin/hostapd -B -P /run/hostapd.wlan0.pid /etc/hostapd/hostapd.wlan0.conf
